Finnish company Simucube unveiled the third generation of its premium direct drive wheelbases in autumn 2025. After six years since the Simucube 2, this is not just a number change — SC3 brings a fundamentally new connectivity architecture, individual calibration of every unit, and completely redesigned software.

LightBridge: Contactless Power and Data Transfer
At the heart of Simucube 3 is LightBridge technology built into the new quick release system. It combines two contactless principles:
Inductive power transfer works on the same principle as wireless phone charging — two coils inside the QR create a magnetic field that wirelessly powers all wheel electronics. Displays, LEDs, encoders, processor — everything runs without batteries or cables.
Infrared data communication provides bidirectional data transfer. IR LEDs and receivers arranged in a ring inside the QR send fast light pulses. Simucube compares the stability and predictability to industrial protocols like EtherCAT and CAN Open, used in robotics and precision machinery. Unlike USB, where latency fluctuates with system load, LightBridge communication is constant.
Mechanically, the QR uses a P3G polygon (harmonic polygon) shape with infinite contact points. The self-centering mechanism ensures zero play even under heavy force feedback loads. No pins, no mechanical contacts, no wear.
Digital Twin: Every Unit Is Unique
One of SC3's most significant innovations that receives little attention. Every wheelbase undergoes laser scanning of the motor during manufacturing, creating a digital twin of that specific unit. The control algorithm is then individually calibrated for that motor.
The result? Sharper, more detailed and more consistent force feedback with whisper-quiet operation. A fundamental technical difference from SC2: the SC3 algorithm controls output torque, while SC2 controlled motor current. This means more precise control over what you actually feel in your hands.
Motors: SPM vs New IPM
SC3 Sport and Pro use optimized SPM (Surface Permanent Magnet) motors — the proven architecture from SC2, but with individual calibration. The Pro version offers higher response speed.
SC3 Ultimate introduces an entirely new architecture — an IPM (Interior Permanent Magnet) motor with internally placed magnets. The concentrated magnetic field density enables higher torque (35 Nm vs 32 Nm on SC2 Ultimate), faster response, and lower power consumption. Simucube describes it as "more detail with less noise".

| Encoder | 22-bit (4.2M steps) | 23-bit (8.4M steps) |
| Calibration | Standard firmware | Individual digital twin |
| Control algorithm | Controls current | Controls output torque |
| QR system | Mechanical SQR | LightBridge (contactless) |
| PC connection | Direct USB 2.0 | Via Link Hub (Ethernet) |
| Telemetry effects | None | Surface, ABS, gear, cornering, RPM |

Yes, SC3 Sport has 2 Nm less than SC2 Sport. Simucube explains this was a deliberate trade-off for FFB quality. As they put it: SC2 was "strong and smooth", SC3 is "natural, quiet, and vivid".
Pro Comparison: SC3 vs SC2
| Parameter | SC2 Pro | SC3 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Peak torque | 25 Nm | 25 Nm |
| Encoder | 22-bit | 23-bit |
| Telemetry effects | No | Yes |
| Price (excl. VAT) | ~1,073 EUR | ~1,219 EUR |
Simucube Tuner 3.0: Next-Gen Software
Tuner 3.0 is a complete redesign:
Simplified controls: Two primary sliders — Torque and Feel — replace dozens of SC2 parameters. Advanced mode with detailed curve control remains available for experienced users.
Telemetry effects (new!): SC3 can transmit game telemetry information through force feedback:
- Road texture — feel the difference between asphalt, concrete and kerbs
- ABS vibration — wheel pulsation when ABS activates
- Gear change — haptic feedback on shifts
- Cornering — enhanced feel through corners
- RPM — engine vibration through the wheel
These effects have separate controls from base FFB and work in iRacing, ACC, Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2/LMU, RaceRoom, AMS2, Dirt Rally, Live For Speed and Forza Motorsport 8.
Pre-test function: Preview how adjustments feel without launching a simulator.
Roadmap: Paddock Module for online profile sharing, localization, onboarding wizard, automatic updates with rollback. Simucube is also considering porting telemetry effects to SC2.
Control Box: Mid-Race Adjustments
Every SC3 includes a physical Control Box for adjusting torque, damping and FFB character during races with an on-screen overlay. SC2 only allowed torque changes via the Premium Torque Off Button.
Simucube Link Hub: Connectivity Center
SC3 does not connect to the PC directly. Everything goes through the Simucube Link Hub — a galvanically isolated Ethernet hub:
- Single USB to PC, RJ45/Ethernet to wheelbase and other devices
- Polls devices tens of thousands of times per second
- Surge and ESD protection
- Shared across the ecosystem — wheelbase, pedals, wireless wheels
- Expandable via standard Ethernet switch
- Price: ~147 EUR excl. VAT (not included, sold separately or bundled)
Wheel Compatibility: Three Tiers
Link Wheels — full LightBridge, no batteries. Simucube Savu Pro/Sport, BavarianSimTec Delta PRO SC. Coming 2026: Ascher Racing, GSI, Cube Controls, SimRacingBay.
Wireless Wheels — wireless data via Link Hub, battery powered. All existing SC2 wireless wheels (Valo, Tahko, Ascher, Cube Controls...).
USB Wheels — direct PC connection, unchanged. Work but do not use Link ecosystem.
Is the SC2 to SC3 Upgrade Worth It?
SimRacingSetup sums it up: SC3 is "a big step up in performance and connectivity", but for existing SC2 Pro owners "may not be worth the cost if you are happy with your 2 Pro". SC2 remains fully supported.
If you are planning a new purchase, however, the choice is clear. And if the wireless battery-free ecosystem appeals to you — SC3 is currently the only way to get there.
